Equal groups and arrays

An array is a picture of a multiplication. It is also a picture of a rectangle.

What this skill is

An array shows multiplication as rows and columns. It is the same object as the area model and the same object as a partial-products box, which is why it is worth reusing for years rather than replacing.

Three ways to teach it at home

  1. Build it with anything — buttons, blocks, a muffin tin. Rows and columns.
  2. Say both facts from the same array: three rows of five, and five columns of three.
  3. Keep the array. It becomes the area model, and then partial products, and then algebra. Same picture for years.
