Making ten

8 + 5: give the 8 two, and you have 10 + 3.

What this skill is

A derived-fact strategy — a reliable way to get to an answer you have not memorised yet. These are the bridge between counting and recall, and skipping them produces children who can only count.

Three ways to teach it at home

  1. Show the move with objects before showing it with numbers.
  2. Have them narrate it: "I gave the eight two, so now it is ten and three."
  3. Use it in real situations for a few days before expecting speed.
