What this skill is
A number bond is a part-part-whole triad. Storing one triad gives four facts at once, and it makes the relationship between addition and subtraction visible before either word is used.
Three ways to teach it at home
- Use real objects and physically split them. Then draw it. Then write it.
- Cover one part and ask what is hidden. That is the whole idea of subtraction, arrived at without the word.
- Say all four facts from one picture: 3 and 4 make 7, 4 and 3 make 7, 7 take 3 leaves 4, 7 take 4 leaves 3.
