What this skill is
Subitizing is recognising how many without counting. It is the seed of decomposition — seeing seven as five and two — which becomes every derived-fact strategy later. The display is deliberately brief; if there is time to count, the exercise has become counting.
Three ways to teach it at home
- Flash it and take it away. If they have time to count, the exercise has become counting, which is a different skill.
- Ask how they saw it. "Five and two" is a better answer than "seven" said slowly.
- Use dice patterns, ten-frames, fingers and random scatters, mixed together.
